Charles Pierre Baudelaire

from Salon 1859:
I want to go back and see the dioramas, for their total and far-reaching magic perpetrates an illusion that serves a useful purpose. I prefer to contemplate theatrical sets where I can find my most cherished dreams artistically expressed and tragically concentrated. Becuase they are false, they are infinitely closer to reality; whereas the majority of our landscape artists are liars, because they have in effect neglected to lie.
